Police are investigating a shooting at Aztec High School that left two students and the shooter dead on Thursday morning.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s office posted notice of a lockdown at the high school just before 9am on Thursday. The school was later evacuated, according to the New Mexico State Police. Other area schools were also locked down, including those on the nearby Navajo Nation. Police notified families of the victims immediately after the incident. Despite various rumors after the shooting, authorities say there are no further threats to students or the public. Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye expressed his condolences to students and their families in a release on Thursday morning. The San Juan County Sheriff’s office is now taking the lead in the investigation.
Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1 also responded to the shooting on Thursday morning via press release. They said district schools were operating under “heightened awareness” with increased police presence in the areas. RE-1 Director Lori Haukeness said her thoughts and prayers were with the Aztec district.
