The Bureau of Land Management cleared an expansion for Energy Fuels’ Daneros Mine earlier this year. Now, two conservationist groups are moving to stop it.
The Grand Canyon Trust and the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance filed an appeal against BLM’s decision on the grounds that they did not conduct a proper environmental assessment.
The organizations also believe that the expansion would put surface water and groundwater at risk of contamination.
Utah Wildlands Program Director Tim Peterson, from the trust, joined KSJD’s Daniel Rayzel to break down the appeal and what the mine’s expansion could mean for the Four Corners.
