The oldest and largest American Indian advocacy organization in the country is calling for a moratorium on oil and gas leasing in the vicinity of Chaco Cultural National Historic Park in New Mexico. The Farmington Daily-Times reports the National Congress of American Indians has come out in opposition to further drilling in the greater Chaco area. The organization, which was established in 1944, wants to see a buffer zone around the park to protect dark night skies, views, and the natural soundscape.
