Mancos School Board President Opposes Arming Teachers

Tom Yoder

The president of the Mancos School Board has voiced his opposition to allowing firearms in district schools. In an interview with KSJD on Thursday, Blake Mitchell said the idea would bring up too many unanswered questions about issues like staff preparedness and safety of students.

“They signed up to be schoolteachers,” Mitchell said. “They didn’t sign up to be security guards and law enforcement.”

The board had discussed the question in the past, but after public input at a meeting in January, they voted down further consideration on a 4 to 1 vote.
