Local Nonprofits Took Kids Boating on the Dolores River. Here's What Happened

Pinon Project

On May 20th, Dolores River Boating Advocates organized a trip down the Lower Dolores River. But this trip was different than others- it included 19 mentees from the Pinon Project. Most of the kids had never been on a river trip before, and they said it was a great way to meet new people and learn about each other while being on the river. KSJD's Austin Cope sat down with three of the kids who took the trip, as well as Dolores River Boating Advocates' Amber Clark and the Pinon Project's Lauren Lacourciere to hear stories from their trip. Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
