FBI Manhunt Underway in Aneth, Utah for Suspect in Shooting

UPDATE 5/24/17: A spokesperson for the FBI states the agency does not believe there is a threat to public safety. Authorities have still not released the identities of the victim or suspect(s) as of May 24th.

Original story, published 5/19/17:

Law officers were seeking a suspect Friday in the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old man in Aneth, Utah on the Navajo Nation.  According to a statement from the FBI, the shooting happened around 2:00 pm.

The FBI, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office and Navajo Division of Public Safety are reportedly investigating. Both Montezuma Creek Elementary School and Whitehorse High School were on lockout Thursday afternoon, meaning students were kept inside because of law enforcement activity outside the schools. The San Juan School District then closed the schools Friday out of an abundance of caution, according to several sources in the community.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment. No information was available at press time regarding the identities of either the victim or the suspect.
