A Conversation on Community Involvement

What does it mean to make change in the community? The answer, of course, depends on who you talk to. However, a community leadership class called Family Leadership Training Institute seeks to answer that question itself. Offered through a combination of state and local organizations, including the Pinon Project, the Montelores Early Childhood Council, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, it helps empower people to make changes at the local level.

To hear some philosophies about what it means to be involved in local communities, KSJD's Austin Cope talked to Kanto McPherson, a family and consumer science teacher at Montezuma Cortez High School, and one of the graduates of the class.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
