Plans for a $100 million power plant in San Juan County, New Mexico, have been canceled.
The Farmington Daily-Times reports that Public Service Company of New Mexico had planned to build the 80-megawatt plant, fueled by natural gas, to help make up for energy it is losing by closing two of four coal-fired power units at the San Juan Generating Station near Waterflow. However, the company now says forecasts for customer demand do not justify adding this much generating capability. A company spokesman told the Daily-Times that a smaller, 40-megawatt plant may be needed by 2020.
