Calling Your Bluff: Campaigning in Utah’s New Town

Jun 26, 2018

If you drive west toward Bluff, Utah, one of the first things you’ll notice will be the Navajo Twins, a set of rock formations overlooking the city. You’ll drive on the mix of paved and gravel roads while admiring impressive walls of sandstone, but there’s a good chance you’ll miss the ongoing campaigning for town council.

Reporter Daniel Rayzel visited Bluff on the eve of its first election for town council after voting to incorporate in late 2017.

Update (June 28): The mayoral race is too close to call. Marica Hadenfeldt has 69 votes while write-ins came to 72. San Juan County has not yet determined how many of those 72 votes go to Ann Leppanen, the main write-in candidate, and to other miscellaneous votes. As of Thursday, San Juan County reports the other Bluff results as follows.

For the 1 1/2-year council seats: Jim Sayers and Brant Murray.

For the 3 1/2-year council seats: Luanne Hook and Linda Sosa.
