Despite warm and wet weather over the past few months, winter precipitation amounts are falling overall in the Cortez area.

That’s according to Cortez weather observer Jim Andrus. He tells KSJD winter precipitation averages in Cortez have declined about 5 percent over the past 30 years. For the month of January, the average decline has been about 13 percent. He says those observations are for the Cortez area only, but they could suggest that temperate climate zones are shifting farther north due to global warming.
