Position Description

Position:     Morning Edition Host

Status:        Part Time

Department:    KSJD

Reports to:    Programming and Media Director

Classification:    Hourly

Primary Responsibilities

The Morning Edition Host is responsible for compiling and presenting news modules (pre-produced from other sources), editing local headline news and engineering the daily public affairs interviews, all within the body of NPR’s Morning Edition.  Duties also includes delivery of underwriting messages, public service announcements, weather, production of local modules (i.e. the Outdoor Report) and promotional announcements within scheduled breaks and introducing local content within NPR’s Morning Edition live satellite programming.

The typical work schedule is from 7:00 to 9:00am, Monday through Friday. Additional hours are required during on-air fundraising, special news events, breaking news coverage, and other times as requested by the Programming and Media Director.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participates in pre-production and broadcast production of on-air fundraising as well as station development and promotional functions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Programming and Media Director.

  • Attends weekly 1.5-hour staff meetings at KSJD.


The Morning Host makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention in close concert with the KSJD Programming and Media Director. This requires understanding of KSJD’s studio equipment, telephones, and broadcast equipment and computer software related to automated broadcasts and satellite receivers.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Engaging and professional on-air presence.

  • Displays solid news judgment, including an awareness of general news.

  • Demonstrated history of maintaining high journalistic standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.

  • Excellent writing skills.

  • Knowledge of digital recording and editing equipment.

  • Demonstrates ability to work within a live broadcast environment including high degree of skill with the studio control board, microphones, telephone, internet browser software, and Windows, Mac, and computer audio playback software.

  • Displays knowledge and adherence to high ethical standards.

  • Possesses effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Additional preferred qualities include Web and social media experience.

  • Must have excellent memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under pressure and deal effectively with simultaneous tasks.

Physical Requirements

Work will require the use of computers with exposure to video display terminals. Position involves periods of standing, stooping, sitting, walking, bending, and kneeling. Adequate hearing is required to hear/talk with all individuals, and to use telephones on a consistent basis.

Work Environment

Work performed is in an office setting with time spent in at the radio station control room and production facilities.

Off-site work is sometimes required at event locations and meetings.
