RMCR 2015 Annual Conference Cortez, CO

Welcome!

Rocky Mountain Community Radio's annual conference will be held Wednesday November 11 through Friday the 13 at KSJD in Cortez, Colorado.  Click here for an Conference Agenda.

We've made arrangements for a lowered rate at the Best Western Turquoise Inn or the Holiday Inn Express--both in Cortez.

The 2015 Conference is focused on:

  • Gathering stations to share;
  • Providing tools and trends for music/programming directors, reporters/news staff, development officials and GM's; and
  • Strengthening and leveraging RMCR's network advantage.

Paragon Media/VuHaus' Mike Henry will provide insight into Indie music programming and audience--Where is it now and where is it going?  What is out there that can help community radio advance music discovery for our audiences.  His chops include college radio (DJ at WUOG in Athens, Georgia in 1979), creating the “NPR News” brand, and work at Indie Rock and Triple A stations, including WFUV/New York, WXPN/Philadelphia, KXT/Dallas and KCMP/Minneapolis.  Henry has a history of working with digital media start-ups and is currently Brand Manager for VuHaus.

Margaret Hunt, Executive Director of Colorado Creative Industries along with her colleagues Dr. Bryce Merrill and Jesse Elliot of Colorado Creative Industries will discuss the state’s plans for investing in music and findings from the 2015 Detour music touring program seek input from RMCR stations on the development of the statewide strategy for music (and arts) development.  Stations that see themselves as advancing the arts and culture in their community will want to be here.

Sally Kane, CEO of NFCB and Beverly Hacker, MSI will build on important work of Mark Fuerst and Valerie Argenbright--who are framing the changing dynamics of public radio membership: For the 7th year in a row, overall donor retention rates have declined. On average, only 20 out of every 100 new donors acquired each year will give a second gift. Organizations are hemorrhaging donors faster than they can replace them. So, what’s the good news?

The single most important thing WE can do to reverse this trend at your organization, is to implement a robust Monthly Giving Program. More and more non-profits are successfully persuading donors to give monthly, and the financial benefits are many?higher retention, higher average gift, higher lifetime value and since these donors renew automatically, a reduction in fundraising expenses and staff time.

They will talk about strategies and tools for small stations to take advantage of the changing dynamics of philanthropic giving.  Stations that are serious about using databases to look forward to advance development (fundraising), especially strategies around retention and recurring gifts, will be particularly interested.  Beverly Hacker is a SalesForce partner and is currently working with KBUT and KSJD on SalesForce conversion.

Dave Habrat and Kricket Lewis of BCI Media will provide tools and training on understanding digital audience and leveraging the information for more support: Translation--Using Google analytics and Search Engine Optimization to drive digital audience.  Program directors and development officials will want to be

Eric Whitney, News Director for Montana Public Radio will provide interactive training for reporters including:

  • Making local stories regional/statewide
  • Finding good story ideas
  • Clear writing
  • Audio gathering
  • Balance and Accuracy
  • Webbifying Scripts
  • Data reporting

On Thursday Night, there will be live music at the Sunflower Theatre with Carute Roma as our headliner.

Friday, is the RMCR Annual Board Meeting, a wrap on on news training and salesforce.  Plus, we're working to organize a trip to Crow Canyon Archaeological Center to meet some of the best archaeologist in the world and talk about the deep history of this place and why it matters today.

Don't forget your mountain bikes or running shoes--there's plenty of stuff to do around here.
