The 2002 Long Mesa Fire burned over 2000 acres in Mesa Verde National Park, including on Chapin Mesa above Oak Tree House

This summer marks 15 years since two significant wildfires in the region: the Long Mesa Fire in Mesa Verde National Park and the Missionary Ridge Fire outside of Durango both occured in 2002. It also marks five years since the 2012 Weber Fire outside of Mancos. Each of these fires burned thousands of acres, and they encouraged people to reflect on resiliency in the face of the destruction that wildfires can bring.

To mark National Wildfire Preparedness Day and to allow residents to share their first-hand accounts of these fires, Montezuma County Firewise will host a “Living with Wildfire" social this Saturday, May 6th from 4 to 7pm at JFargos in Cortez. KSJD's Austin Cope sat down with the new Montezuma County Firewise coordinator Amanda Brenner-Cannon to learn more about what her organization does.
