West Nile Virus Infects Two People In Utah

Creative Commons

Two cases of West Nile virus in human beings have been confirmed in Utah. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that mosquitoes with the virus have been found this summer in eight counties across the state, though not in San Juan County. Health officials are urging residents to take measures to avoid mosquito bites because in rare cases West Nile can be serious or even fatal. There have been no human cases reported in the Four Corners area this year, but there have been a number across the Four Corners states. The Arizona Department of Health says that state has had 36 confirmed or probable human cases, most in Maricopa County in southern Arizona, and three of those resulted in fatalities. The Centers for Disease Control reports three cases in Colorado, all around the Front Range, and one in New Mexico.
