The Utah state Legislature has passed a resolution that calls on the state’s congressional delegation to shrink Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports those who want to reduce the size of the 1.9-million-acre monument say it isn’t popular with locals and that its boundaries need to be negotiated. However, others say the two-decade-old monument, created by President Clinton, has boosted economic growth and jobs in the counties where it is located. The Legislature has already passed a resolution calling on President Trump to rescind the new Bears Ears National Monument in San Juan County, but it’s unclear whether he can do this unilaterally.
