Utah Legislator Wants to Name Scenic Highway After Donald Trump

Will there be a Donald J. Trump National Parks Highway in southern Utah? State Representative Mike Noel of Kanab has sponsored a bill to rename the scenic Utah National Parks Highway after the president. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Noel says the nomenclature would thank Trump for his downsizing of two Utah national monuments, Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. The highway is actually a route that starts at Crescent Junction, heads south on State Highway 191, then follows other federal and state highways. It crosses several national parks including Capital Reef, Bryce, and Zion, as well as Cedar Breaks and Grand Staircase national monuments. But Noel’s bill is facing some roadblocks. Democrats have heaped ridicule on the idea, and Governor Gary Herbert says he thinks it’s too soon to be naming things after Trump, who has only been in office a little over a year. On Monday, Noel delayed a vote on HB 481 so he could seek more support.
