Too Much "Rhythm and Soul"? Mancos Residents Concerned About Festival Noise

Five citizens concerned about a “Rhythm and Soul Festival” planned near Mancos in late September came to the Montezuma County Commission meeting on Monday to ask that the public hearing on the permit application be postponed so they could marshal opposition.

The festival, presented by the nonprofit Agape Durango, would be held at the Samuel Perry Ranch on County Road G. It is expected to draw about 1,000 people for speakers, live music, yoga, and vendor booths. But neighbor Robin Strother said it would be a major impact on the small rural area and worried about music playing late into the night. Tom Buffaloe, also a nearby resident, said there is “overwhelming resistance” to it in the neighborhood. Others voiced concerns about traffic and dust on the narrow gravel road. County officials said rather than rescheduling and readvertising the hearing, set for May 8th, it could be started and then continued to a later date.
