Officials with the Dolores Ranger District of the San Juan National Forest have identified about 3,000 acres where they want to conduct prescribed burns this fall.
Dolores District Ranger Derek Padilla told the Montezuma County commissioners on Monday the burning will be done in the Lost Canyon area, the Glade, and the Carlisle Point-Trimble Point area. The low-intensity blazes will be conducted in mid to late September if conditions allow. Padilla said he would like to treat 3,000 to 6,000 acres annually with prescribed burns to reduce fuel loads. This would be on top of any naturally ignited fires that were managed for resource benefits.
