Gail Binkly

Protesters chanting, “Shame on you!” greeted Third District Congressman Scott Tipton at the Montezuma County courthouse Monday morning.

Tipton, a Republican, voted for the American Health Care Act recently passed by the House. Speaking before an overflow audience at the county commission meeting, Tipton gave an update on legislation and answered questions from the commissioners on several topics The meeting turned into an impromptu town hall as Tipton took questions from the feisty but civil audience, several of whom voiced concerns about how the new health bill would affect people with pre-existing conditions. Tipton defended the bill, saying it gives more power to states and “the best solutions are local.” But audience members asked why the Congressional Budget Office hadn’t had time to review it and why groups such as the American Medical Association oppose it.
