Southwest Colorado residents are among some 620,000 statewide being notified that their personal information, including Social Security numbers and dates of birth, was posted on a state Judicial Department website. The Durango Herald reports that some 15,000 letters are being mailed to residents in Montezuma and Dolores counties. The letters from the State Court Administrator’s Office state that the information, which came from sample jury files, was posted inadvertently  to an internal website. It has since been removed. For anyone to access the data, they would have had to do a search on the Judicial Department website itself, not through an external search engine. However, the letter states that files for at least four counties – Crowley, Pueblo, Rio Grande and Weld – were accessed externally. Although the Court Administrator’s Office says there is no evidence the information has been stolen or misused, it suggests people contact one or more credit reporting agencies to place a fraud alert on their account as a precaution.
