New Solar-Powered Lights Guide Motorists On Highway 160 Near Towaoc

The Colorado Department of Transportation says that these small, energy-efficient lights are set into the pavement to allow traffic and heavy equipment to drive over them

More than 200 solar LED lights have been installed along U.S. Highway 160 near the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation.

In a release, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced recently that the lights are designed to improve safety by illuminating the roadway and delineating lanes after dark near the Ute casino and the turnoff to the town of Towaoc. The energy-efficient light bulbs, which come on automatically at dusk, are housed in steel disks, along with solar cells that collect energy during the day. The disks are embedded in the roadway just below the surface, allowing traffic and heavy equipment such as snowplows to drive over them. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians navigating the three junctions and various auxiliary and merging lanes in the area should see improved safety.
