Navajo Poet Esther Belin Shares Her Work, Reflects on Impacts of Her Family's Forced Relocation

KSJD's Austin Cope spoke with Durango-based poet and multimedia artist Esther Belin before one of her local appearances in Cortez on April 20th. Ms. Belin is the author of the 1999 book From the Belly of my Beauty, which won an American Book Award, and the newly-published Of Cartography. They discussed how the U.S. Goverment's decision to enroll her parents in a boarding school in California in the 1950s affected her life growing up in Los Angeles. Click below to listen.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
