The Navajo Nation is reiterating its official support for the proposed Bears Ears National Monument despite opposition from some Navajo tribal members in San Juan County, Utah.

At a community event May 18th, Navajo council delegates issued a statement supporting an inter-tribal effort to persuade President Obama to take executive action to create the monument. Delegates said Bears Ears represents an importance piece of Diné history as the birthplace of their leader, Chief Manuelito, and that it faces constant threats, including desecration of cultural sites.
