Montezuma County Historical Society Hopes to Create Museum Behind Downtown Courthouse

Thousands of artifacts that document the history of Montezuma County have finally found a home. Members of the Montezuma County Historical Society turned out en masse Monday to thank the county commissioners for giving them a five-year renewable lease on the Social Services building behind the downtown courthouse. The building will be available to the society once it’s vacated as the county moves into the new Combined Courthouse near Empire Street and Mildred Avenue. Historical Society chairperson Ann Brown said her group was a bit gun-shy because they had been “bounced around from place to place” over the years in their quest for a permanent home. But Commission Chair Larry Don Suckla assured the group that the commissioners weren’t going to change their minds. Brown said the society will be applying for grants to remodel the somewhat historic building, the original home of the town’s now-defunct Montgomery Ward outlet. Brown said she hoped the museum could be open by next summer.
