Montezuma-Cortez School Board Ponders Arming Administrators

Would arming key personnel make schools safer?

The Montezuma-Cortez Re-1 School Board took up that question December 20th but had no easy answers. Board President Jack Schuenemeyer said the city police and county sheriff’s office respond swiftly to calls and asking civilians to make a life-or-death decision is “awfully tough”. But Kara Suckla said having armed administrators might make  sense for the schools farthest from population centers such as Pleasant View, Lewis and Battle Rock. The board agreed extensive, ongoing training would be necessary for anyone assigned to have firearms. The board agreed to seek further information from schools that already do arm some of their staff and take up the issue again.
