Charlie Belle isn't a person, it's a band: the duo of vocalist/guitarist Jendayi Bonds and her brother, drummer Gyasi Bonds, who released two talked-about EPs this year.

Critics expect big things from the band Charlie Belle. They released two EPs this year, and were tagged by many as a band to watch — all with the band's two members not even out of high school.

Jendayi Bonds is a senior, and her younger brother Gyasi is a freshman. She writes the songs, sings, and plays the guitar; he plays the drums. The two spend a lot of time together on and off the stage, and, like all siblings, they bicker. But Jendayi (pronounced "jen-DIE-yee") and Gyasi ("JAH-see") say that playing music together also deepens their appreciation of one another.

"I feel like when Gyasi and I get together and he's playing music, I really see his maturity," Jendayi says. "A lot of the time, it's hard for me to see that; he's a really goofy guy. But when he sits down behind the drums, he plays like someone twice his age and we really fall into sync."

Weekend Edition Sunday spoke with the two young musicians about Charlie Belle's big year and what they plan to do when Jendayi heads off to college. Hear more of the conversation at the audio link.
