  • 100-year old Cortez woman proves instrumental in the apprehension of two burglary suspects.
  • Cortez Police are reviewing video surveillance records for clues to the identity of the person or persons who fired a BB gun at the windows of businesses along Main Street.

A 100-year old Cortez woman proved instrumental in the apprehension of two burglary suspects recently. On the afternoon of November 20th, she called police to say two men had broken into her garage on the south side of town. Police reports say a responding officer found two 18-year-olds in the area on bikes whose description matched that given by the woman. She later identified one of the suspects as having crossed her backyard with a companion, entered her garage, and come out carrying some items. She said she’d yelled at the pair as they left. A brand-name fanny pack in one man’s possession had a tag on it with the name of the woman’s granddaughter. The suspects were taken to the county detention center and placed on felony holds for second-degree burglary, with possible other charges including crimes against an at-risk adult, also a felony.

Cortez Police are still reviewing video surveillance records for clues to the identity of the person or persons who fired a BB gun at the windows of businesses along Main Street on November 22nd. No one was injured in the spree, which took place around 7:30 in the evening. However, windows were damaged at nearly a dozen commercial establishments, some of which included the Super 8 Motel, Four Corners Community Bank, Main Street Brewery, Susie’s Gifts, Bru’s House of Colors, Fiesta Theatre, Slavens, and the Aneth Lodge.
