  • Charges filed against former Mancos Marshall
  • Housing rental prices too high in Southwest Colorado

Six misdemeanor charges - including perjury, false reporting and official misconduct - have been filed in Montezuma County Court against former Mancos Marshal John Cox, who resigned November 16th. Court documents give few details but say the charges stem from incidents in August, September and October, including an allegedly false statement involving a woman’s speeding ticket. Cox had been arrested on a DUI charge November 10th in La Plata County after being suspended by the Mancos Town Board November 4th for undisclosed reasons. According to a report on Indianapolis channel RTV 6, Cox, who came to the marshal’s office in 2012, had another DUI arrest in September 2009 while he was chief of police for Center Grove Schools and subsequently resigned.

Are housing-rental prices high in Southwest Colorado? Yes, says a newly released report  issued by the Region 9 Economic Development District. The average cost of renting a one-bedroom unit in Montezuma,  Dolores, La Plata and Archuleta counties is higher than estimates of fair market rent as determined by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The report also says home ownership is out of reach for many families in the region. Thirty-nine percent of families in Montezuma County, 21 percent in Dolores County, and a whopping 54 percent in La Plata County would not be able to afford a median-priced home in 2014, according to the data.
