  • Montezuma-Cortez School District Superintendent Alex Carter is leaving to take a position with the non-profit Colorado Education Initiative.
  • Utah Attorney General's Office confirms it is conducting a criminal investigation involving San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman.

Montezuma-Cortez School District Superintendent Alex Carter is leaving to take a position with the nonprofit Colorado Education Initiative. School-board president Jack Schuenemeyer told KSJD on Monday that the date of Carter’s departure, and an interim successor, have not been decided but will be discussed at Tuesday night’s board meeting. Schueneyemer said the initiative – which partners with the state Department of Education and school districts to improve student achievement – wants Carter on board as soon as possible. During his three and a half years with the Re-1 district, Carter oversaw the creation of a new high school and the improvement of on-time graduation rates from 62 percent in 2012 to 80.7 percent in 2015. Schuenemeyer said, “I’ve been very pleased with Alex’s leadership.”

The Utah attorney general’s office has confirmed it is conducting a criminal investigation involving San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the office declined to disclose details. However, the Tribune says the probe may be related to one begun in 2013 concerning potential conflicts of interest in Lyman’s private work as a certified public accountant and his lowering of certain property-tax assessments as a county commissioner. In statements to the Tribune, Lyman denied any wrongdoing.
