Former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says armed protesters who have taken over a national wildlife refuge in Oregon are “squeaky wheels” who are “far out of touch with most folks living in the West”. Salazar spoke during a conference call Monday regarding results of the recent Conservation in the West Poll. The bipartisan scientific poll is done annually by the Colorado College State of the Rockies Project. The survey of 2800 registered voters in seven Western states found that 58 percent opposed transferring federal lands to states or private owners. Opposition was highest in Arizona and lowest in Utah, where 47 percent opposed the lands transfer and 41 percent supported it. Seventy-two percent overall said having federal public lands in their state helps their economy. The survey has an overall margin of error of 2.74 percent.
Two suspects in a Jan. 5th armed home invasion in rural Montezuma County have been arrested. Sheriff Steve Nowlin told the county commissioners Monday that the men were apprehended the following day in La Plata County. Nowlin said a search of their vehicle turned up two firearms. Two shots were reportedly fired during the robbery, during which $10,000 in cash and two pounds of processed marijuana were taken, but no one was injured.
