Third Congressional District Representative Scott Tipton will face challengers in both the Republican primary and the November general election. The Durango Herald reports that Tipton, a Cortez businessman elected in 2010, garnered 60 percent of the delegate vote at Friday’s congressional district GOP assembly in Colorado Springs. A recent law-school graduate, Alex Beinstein of Carbondale, nabbed 40 percent to qualify for the June 28th primary ballot. Meanwhile, three Democrats are reportedly vying to face Tipton in November.
Two citizens again urged the Montezuma County commission Monday to support a master leasing plan process for local energy development, but there was no indication the commissioners have changed their opposition to creating such a plan. Chris Eastin of Cortez told the board the MLP could protect the aging Summit and Puett reservoirs and their irrigation systems from seismic activity related to potential oil and gas drilling. M.B. McAfee of Lewis said an MLP would offer more detailed and specific protections for places such as the Phil’s World trail system. The comment period on the idea of an MLP has ended. The sub-group studying the MLP will present its findings June 10th at a meeting of the Southwest Resource Advisory Council in Mancos.
