Protesters rally in front of the Bureau of Land Management offices in Salt Lake City on March 20th to oppose to the Trump Administration's handling of public lands. Tribes and environmental groups are suing the administration to stop cuts to the monument.

The national debate about the Bears Ears National Monument has quieted somewhat since President Trump announced plans to cut its area by 85 percent in early December. But the conflict is far from over. Tribes, environmental groups, and other monument supporters have filed lawsuits challenging Trump's cuts, but the Bureau of Land Management has also begun moving forward on monument scoping and public comment for the reduced monument size. Charles Wilkinson, University of Colorado Professor and advisor to the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, has been involved in some of the litigation against Trump's cuts. He joined KSJD's Austin Cope to reflect more on the process.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
