Haycamp Mesa Murder Victim Identified as 42-Year-Old James Box, Jr., of Ignacio

Austin Cope

A 42-year-old Ignacio man is dead following a shooting that reportedly took place on Haycamp Mesa in the San Juan National Forest northeast of Cortez. According to Montezuma County Sheriff Steve Nowlin, James Box, Jr., a member of the Southern Ute Tribe, had been shot with a handgun. Thirty-nine-year-old Kevin Wade Folsom of Montezuma County has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death. The Cortez Journal reports that Box’s body was found very early Thursday morning off Forest Road 557, known as Indian Ridge Road. The discovery reportedly came after a citizen called Nowlin late Wednesday to report that he had heard about a shooting in the vicinity. Nowlin told the Journal that sheriff’s deputies searched for three hours before finding the body. Folsom was arrested late Wednesday. The suspect, who has a lengthy criminal history, reportedly was partying with the victim and an unidentified person in the forest when the incident occurred. Drugs reportedly were involved. Folsom was being held on a $500,000 bond issued by District Court Judge Douglas Walker.
