EPA Wants to Keep Operating Interim Water Treatment Plant Near Gold King Mine

Environmental Protection Agency
The EPA built these retaining ponds to slow the flow of the Gold King Mine spill in 2014.

The Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comment on the continued operation of an interim water-treatment plant that handles discharge from the Gold King Mine near Silverton.

In August of 2015, a breach of the mine’s portal sent millions of gallons of contaminated water pouring into the Animas River and beyond. The agency built the interim plant two months later. The EPA says its recommended action is to keep utilizing the plant beyond year’s end while evaluating long-term solutions to water-quality issues. The comment period runs through December 14th.
