A diverse New Orleans-based funk and jam band, Dumpstaphunk was formed in the early 2000s by Ivan Neville and his cousin, Ian Neville (son of Art Neville). Their debut at the 2003 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival served up a bass-heavy fusion of New Orleans groove and classic funk. It was only fitting that Dumpstaphunk's first album was a live recording from that same venue in 2006.

In 2013, Dumpstaphunk supported Lionel Richie on a five-city tour, while noted rock critic Jon Pareles wrote in The New York Times, "I don't expect to hear anything funkier this year." Drummer Nikki Glaspie — who spent half a decade as Beyonce's hand-picked percussionist — takes a turn on lead vocals for the song "Betty Davis" halfway through this set. Dumpstaphunk's latest is Dirty Word.
