Dolores Residents Hope to Solve Playground Closure, Call on Town Board for Better Communication

Gail Binkly

The playground at Joe Rowell Park in Dolores has been an emotional topic of discussion after the Dolores Town Board votedto close the structure on September 11th, citing safety reasons. A group of citizens called "Save Our Playground" has scheduled a meeting on September 28th-- three days after the Town Board's workshop planned for the 25th--to try to decide what to do next. KSJD's Austin Cope spoke with Dolores resident and Save Our Playground organizer Nikki Gillespie to talk more about their response to the Town Board's decision.  Click below to listen.

KSJD has also reached out to the Dolores Town Board for further comment, but town officials have not yet responded as of Monday.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area. He has a degree in Politics from Oberlin College in Ohio.
