Daneros Uranium Mine Expansion: Radioactive Hazard or No Big Deal?

United States Geological Survey

A few miles from Natural Bridges and the new Bears Ears National Monument, a uranium mining company hopes to expand the Daneros mine from 4.5 acres in size to 46 acres. The Bureau of Land Management has approved an environmental assessment for the project, and the mining company says the mine will be safe and economically feasible. But environmental advocacy groups and tribes say more needs to be done to ensure that the mine is safe. The Grand Canyon Trust calls the mine a “zombie mine,” because it had been inactive for some years before coming back to life with this proposed expansion. KSJD's Austin Cope spoke to both the Grand Canyon Trust and to Energy Fuels, the company that is proposing the expansion. Click below to listen to the interviews.
