Voters in the city of Cortez will be asked this spring whether to extend a sales tax to help fund the Recreation Center, but at a reduced amount.
On Tuesday, the city council unanimously approved putting the question on the April 3rd ballot. In 2001, electors approved a sales tax of just over a half-cent – 5.5 cents for every $10 purchase – to finance the rec center’s construction. That tax is set to sunset in 2021 or when the bonds are paid off. The city is asking for a tax of 3.5 cents on every $10 to continue after that time, with funds going to operations and maintenance.
