A bill is making its way through the Colorado State Capitol that would fund efforts to promote rural broadband. In the meantime, governments in rural regions southwestern Colorado are continuing to talk about the benefits of faster internet. On Tuesday, February 20th, the City of Cortez is planning an event, intended especially for local officials and candidates for local office, to share more information about the benefits of broadband. KSJD’s Austin Cope spoke with Cortez Mayor Karen Sheek and Southwest Council of Governments Executive Director Myriam Gillow-Wiles, about how their efforts are going.

Austin Cope is a former Morning Edition host for KSJD and now produces work on a freelance basis for the station. He grew up in Cortez and hosted a show on KSJD when he was 10 years old. After graduating from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 2010, he lived in Belgium, Ohio, Spain, northern Wyoming, and Himachal Pradesh, India before returning to the Cortez area.
