After a delay last fall, remodels to the Cortez Main Street are now expected to begin this summer.
Cortez Director of Public Works Phil Johnson told KSJD two contractors placed bids on Wednesday to install medians along four blocks of Main Street. The Colorado Department of Transportation will also fund wheelchair-accessible sidewalk improvements.
Johnson said pending CDOT agreement, the project should begin in June and go through September. He said crews will have “boots on the ground every day” to help business owners and contractors minimize impacts from the project.
Crews will close one lane of traffic in each direction for one block at a time. The new medians will contain vegetation and landscaping, and will be designed to slow traffic in the central part of town. Johnson says the City Council will award the contract on Tuesday, and CDOT will provide its agreement after that.
To share more details on the project, Phil Johnson and Cortez City Manager Shane Hale spoke with KSJD's Austin Cope on Thursday's Morning Edition. Click below to listen.
