The City of Cortez hopes to build a connection to the Mesa Trail through this property owned by the Cortez Fire Protection District. In return, the City would waive the fees for the new fire station.

The City of Cortez may be able to spruce up its South Broadway entrance if a proposed land exchange with the Cortez Fire Protection District goes through.

At the city-council workshop Tuesday, City Manager Shane Hale said the fire district would like to swap its parcel at 928 South Broadway in return for having building fees waived for its new fire station and administration building. An old house on the tract was used for firefighter training. Hale said the city could install a small parking area there, put up a gateway sign and have a trailhead for the nearby Mesa Trail. The council supported moving forward with the concept by having a consultant check to see whether any hazardous-materials abatement would need to be done when demolishing the house.
