Boggy Draw Trail Booby Trapped

San Juan National Forest--Boggy Draw

A Forest Service law enforcement ranger is investigating a report of a fishing line strung dangerously across a trail in the Boggy Draw area north of Dolores.

Recreation staff officer Tom Rice of the Dolores Ranger District tells KSJD that a cyclist reported finding the hard-to-see monofilament line while riding on the Boggy Trail near its intersection with the Maverick Loop on January 12th. Boggy Draw’s single-track trails are popular with cyclists, hikers, and other recreationists. Rice says the cyclist’s report is believed credible and the line, strung at head level, was apparently placed with the intention of harming someone. He says fortunately the cyclist noticed the line before hitting it, and removed it. Rice says he believes the incident is an isolated one. No similar occurrences have been reported in the area. He asks that recreationists keep an eye out for hazards, whether natural or man-made, and report any to him at the Dolores Ranger District office, 970-882-6843.
