Bears Ears National Monument Reduction Could Be Dramatic

Creative Commons

Could Bears Ears National Monument in southeast Utah be reduced from 1.35 million to 160,000 acres? The New York Times reports that sources familiar with a recent review of 27 national monuments say Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke was leaning toward such a recommendation. But whether a president can unilaterally reduce a monument by so large an amount has never been tested in court.
